EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a piece from The Loan Collection at South-Kensington in 1862 - the Hemispherical cat's-eye. This unique gemstone, believed to be the largest of its kind, is set in massive pure gold adorned with ruby cabochons in an Oriental setting. What makes this particular cat's-eye even more intriguing is its history - it was taken from the King of Kandy when his kingdom was conquered.
Kandy, once a kingdom in Sri Lanka known for its high-quality cymophane chrysoberyl, held great significance in the world of gemstones. In fact, one of the King's prized cymophane chrysoberyl gems weighing over 300 carats was gifted to Queen Victoria herself and became known as the Kandy Cat's Eye.
This antique artifact not only showcases exquisite craftsmanship but also carries with it a controversial past filled with looting and plundering during Britain's colonial era. Despite its dark history, this Hemispherical cat's-eye remains a symbol of cultural heritage and serves as a reminder of the complex relationships between nations throughout history.
Displayed against a black and white backdrop, this print invites viewers to ponder upon the intricate details and rich historical context surrounding this remarkable piece from The Loan Collection at South-Kensington Museum.
