EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic London Bridge in all its glory during the late 19th century. The bridge, originally built in 1825 by John Rennie, had to be reconstructed due to the increasing traffic demands of the time. It stood as a symbol of progress and innovation amidst a bustling cityscape. In this snapshot, we witness a vibrant scene filled with activity and movement. A horse-drawn carriage gracefully crosses the bridge while a busy horse bus passes by, showcasing the evolving road transport of that era. The river Thames flows beneath, adorned with boats gliding through its waters, representing an essential mode of transportation at that time. The architectural features of London Bridge are prominently displayed in this monochrome image. Its grand arches and intricate design stand as testaments to British engineering prowess. Through stereoscopic photography techniques employed by Underwood & Underwood, viewers can almost feel immersed in this historical moment. It is fascinating to note that this particular London Bridge depicted here was eventually replaced by the current one constructed between 1967 and 1973. However, it found new life across oceans when it was sold to Lake Havasu City in Arizona and transported there for reassembly in 1971. This remarkable print serves as both a visual feast for admirers of architecture and history enthusiasts alike – capturing not only a specific place but also an entire era's spirit within its frame.
