EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Louis XIII, the King of France from 1615. Created by artist Chevignard in the late 19th century, this portrait captures the essence of a powerful monarch during the 17th century. Louis XIII was born in 1601 to Henri IV and Marie de Medici, and later became the father of Louis XIV. Ascending to the throne at just eight years old after his father's tragic assassination, Louis XIII initially ruled under his mother's regency until he turned thirteen. However, Marie de Medici continued to wield significant influence over French affairs until her exile in 1617. The image portrays Louis XIII mounted on a majestic horse, exuding an air of authority and elegance. His attire reflects both fashion trends of that era as well as his royal status - donning a hat with a scarf draped around it and adorned in richly colored garments befitting his position. This engraving is part of "La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles". Volume IV - an extensive collection edited by F Roy and published between 1882-1884. It offers us a glimpse into French history while showcasing Chevignard's artistic talent for capturing not only physical likeness but also conveying power and nobility through portraiture. As we admire this remarkable print today, we are reminded of King Louis XIII's enduring legacy within French monarchy and its impact on European history during the seventeenth century.
