EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Lovekyns Chapel in Kingston, dating back to 1905. The artist behind this masterpiece is none other than James Ogilvy, who skillfully brings out the architectural marvel of this historic chapel. Originally founded in 1309 by Edward Loveky, the chapel underwent a significant reconstruction in 1352 under the patronage of John Lovekyn, who served as Lord Mayor of London. Its rich history and stunning design make it a true gem among Surrey's landmarks. However, fate had different plans for Lovekyns Chapel. In 1535, the Crown seized control over both the chapel and its surrounding church grounds. Despite this setback, their story continued as they found new purpose when Kingston Grammar School was established on these premises in 1561 through Queen Elizabeth I's Royal Charter. The photograph not only showcases the exquisite architecture but also transports us back to an era where tranquility reigned supreme within these hallowed walls. It serves as a testament to our enduring connection with heritage and reminds us of how historical sites can evolve while retaining their significance. Preserved through time and now immortalized by James S. Ogilvy's lens, this image from "A Pilgrimage In Surrey" allows us to appreciate Lovekyns Chapel's grandeur and invites us to delve into its fascinating past without mentioning any commercial use or association beyond appreciating its artistic value.
