Lumbering in New Brunswick - Lumbermen at Work in the Forest, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Lumbering in New Brunswick - Lumbermen at Work in the Forest, [Canada], 1858. The lumbering business is the leading element of wealth in the province; and the sawmills, which are found collected at the mouths of all its rivers, as well as the building of ships, and the business of transportation to the mother country, give employment to a very large proportion of the population. Almost the whole surface of New Brunswick is covered with dense forests of pine, spruce, fir, and hemlock; and for the conveyance of which from the wilderness to the market towns all the streams are employed as highways...The felling of the trees which are thus transformed for exportation is generally performed by parties of men hired by the merchant or dealer for the purpose. In the autumn they are dispatched into the woods with a supply of provisions, axes, and other tools, oxen, and every requisite for the enterprise...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
Lumbering in New Brunswick: A Glimpse into the Past - Unknown (Lumbermen at Work in the Forest, New Brunswick, Canada, 1858) This photograph transports us back in time to the bustling lumber industry of New Brunswick, Canada, in the late 19th century. The image, titled "Lumbermen at Work in the Forest," showcases the dedication and hard work of the lumbermen as they toil in the dense, untamed wilderness. New Brunswick's lumber industry was a significant contributor to the province's prosperity during this era. Sawmills, located at the mouths of its numerous rivers, provided employment for a substantial portion of the population. The lumber, along with the construction of ships and transportation services, were the primary sources of wealth in the province. The photograph captures the essence of the lumbering process, with the forested landscape stretching out as far as the eye can see. Nearly the entire surface of New Brunswick was covered in thick forests of pine, spruce, fir, and hemlock. The rivers, acting as natural highways, were employed to transport the felled trees from the wilderness to the market towns. The felling of the trees was typically carried out by groups of laborers hired by merchants or dealers. In the autumn, these men were dispatched into the woods, armed with provisions, axes, and other essential tools, as well as oxen to aid in the arduous task. The lumbermen's determination and perseverance transformed the trees into valuable resources, ready for exportation to markets beyond the province's borders. This photograph, taken from the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the critical role the lumber industry played in the economic development of New Brunswick.
