EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 19th century folio showcases the lustration, or anointing, of the first Jina, Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), from the Bhaktamara Stotra (Hymn of the Immortal Devotee). The image, believed to have been created between 1800 and 1825, originates from the region of Gujarat in India or Southeast Asia. The Jina is depicted in an orange-colored, opaque watercolor painting on paper, seated on a lotus throne, flanked by his attendants and celestial beings. He is crowned with a magnificent diadem and adorned with precious jewels, symbolizing his status as the founder of the Ikshvaku dynasty. The scene unfolds on a mountain top, possibly Mount Meru, with the ocean in the background. The Jina is surrounded by a group of men, including the king, Indra, and other deities, who are passing him the royal paraphernalia for his anointing. The monarch, identified as Acharya Manatunga, holds a pot filled with water, while Indra pours it over the Jina's head. Shakra, the king of gods, holds a fan to cool the Jina, and other deities offer him various offerings. This artwork is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Jainism and Hinduism in Asia, showcasing the concept of teamwork and unity in the performance of a religious ritual. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and the peaceful expression on the Jina's face make this folio a captivating work of art that transcends time and geography.
