The Maharajah Scindia of Gwalior; The Maharajah of Cashmere, 1876. It should be observed that the Mahratta potentates of Western India are now valuable allies of the British Government. Scindia was overthrown in the Sepoy War of 1858, by a rebellion headed by Tantia Topee and the Ranee or Dowager Princess of Jhansi, at the instigation of Nana Sahib. He was restored by the British force under Sir Hugh Rose, now Lord Strathnairn, who stormed the rock- fortress of Gwalior'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the regal presence of Maharajah Jayajirao Scindia of Gwalior and Maharajah Ranbir Singh of Cashmere, taken in 1876. The Maharajahs of Gwalior and Cashmere were once powerful rulers in Western India, but their allegiance shifted during the Sepoy War of 1858. Scindia was overthrown by Tantia Topee and the Ranee of Jhansi, with the instigation of Nana Sahib, but was later restored by the British forces under Sir Hugh Rose. In this portrait, Maharajah Jayajirao Scindia is depicted wearing a grand headdress adorned with jewels, pearls, and plumes. His face is adorned with intricate facial paint, and his beard is neatly trimmed and styled. The Maharajah's neck is adorned with a jeweled necklace, adding to his regal appearance. Maharajah Ranbir Singh of Cashmere is also seen in the photograph, wearing a similar headdress and adorned with jewels and pearls. This photograph is an intriguing glimpse into the imperial past of India during the British Raj. The Maharajahs of Gwalior and Cashmere were once powerful rulers in their own right, but their fates were ultimately determined by the political machinations of the British Empire. The photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India during this period, with its intricate headdresses, facial paint, and jeweled adornments. The photograph was published in the Illustrated London News, a leading newspaper of the time, providing a window into the world of the Maharajahs and the British Raj in India. The image is a valuable historical record, offering insights into the lives of these powerful rulers and the imperial power that shaped their destinies.
