EDITORS COMMENTS
Maisaka—No. 31: Departure from Hamamatsu, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, is a stunning 19th-century color woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige. This work of art, also known as the Reisho Tokaido, was created between 1847 and 1852. The scene depicted in this print showcases the bustling activity at Maisaka, the thirty-first station on the Tokaido road, which connected Edo (present-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. The print captures the moment of departure from Hamamatsu, a city in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The estuary and the riverbank are filled with boats and men preparing for departure, as the sun sets in the background. The vibrant colors, particularly the green hues of the hills and the blue of the river, add to the serene and picturesque quality of the scene. The cartouche at the top right corner of the print provides the title and artist's name. Hiroshige's masterful use of perspective and attention to detail bring the scene to life, making it a beloved and iconic representation of the famous sights of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido. This print is an excellent example of the artistic school of ukiyo-e, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. The intricate block printing process used to create this work of art is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans involved. Today, Maisaka—No. 31: Departure from Hamamatsu is a cherished piece of Asian heritage art, showcased in galleries and museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago.
