Her Majesty en route for Cherbourg, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Her Majesty en route for Cherbourg, 1858. Queen Victoria travels...to visit the Emperor and Empress of the French at Cherbourg, attended by a convoy befitting the head of a great maritime nation...The Pera, with some hundreds of the members of the House of Commons on board, got under way soon after daybreak on Wednesday morning at Southampton, and proceeded direct to Cherbourg...The escort squadron...consisted of the Royal Albert; the Renown; the Euryalus; the Diadem; the Curacoa; [and] the Racoon...At nine minutes past twelve the Victoria and Albert started for Cherbourg, the wind being moderate, blowing west-south-west, and the ship steaming against tide. The Royal yacht passed on with great velocity, the Admiralty flag floating from her foremast, the Royal standard from her mainmast, and the Union Jack from her mizen-mast and stern. The Trinity yacht, having on board the Masters of the Trinity House, was about 200 yards in her wake. At seven o'clock her Majesty the Queen, having had a very fine passage across the Channel, arrived at Cherbourg with her escort, and was saluted by the French fleet'. EDITORS COMMENTS
"Her Majesty's Voyage to Cherbourg, 1858: A Grand Maritime Procession This photograph depicts Her Majesty Queen Victoria en route to Cherbourg, France, in 1858. The image captures the grandeur and spectacle of the British monarch's journey to visit the Emperor and Empress of France. The Pera, a magnificent steam-powered royal yacht, set sail from Southampton early on a Wednesday morning, attended by an impressive convoy. The convoy, a testament to Britain's maritime prowess, consisted of the Royal Albert, the Renown, the Euryalus, the Diadem, and the Curacoa, among other vessels. The escort squadron, led by the Royal Albert, got underway shortly after daybreak, and the Pera followed suit soon after. The wind was moderate, blowing west-south-west, and the tide was against them, but the ships pressed on with determination. As the Victoria and Albert began its journey across the Channel, the Admiralty flag flew proudly from its foremast, the Royal standard from its mainmast, and the Union Jack from its mizen-mast and stern. The Trinity yacht, carrying the Masters of the Trinity House, followed closely behind. At noon, the Victoria and Albert started for Cherbourg, and the fleet made good progress against the tide. The ships passed the French coast at seven o'clock in the evening, and Her Majesty was greeted with a grand salute from the French fleet upon her arrival." This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1858, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pomp of a royal voyage during the Victorian era. The image captures the majesty of the British monarch and the power of the British navy, as they sailed across the English Channel to pay a visit to their French counterparts.
