Her Majesty's Despatch Gun-Boats, 1854. Creator: Smyth
Her Majesty's Despatch Gun-Boats, 1854. Crimean War: Royal Navy ships Lynx, Beagle, Arrow and Viper en route for the Black Sea. The boats composed of this little fleet may be looked upon as by far the most perfect and effective class of vessels ever furnished for the purposes for which they are intended. [They] have been built jointly by the eminent firm of Messrs. Green and Messrs. Mare, of Blackwall, and in their construction the builders have most conscientiously carried out the excellent designs furnished by the Admiralty...both in appearance and speed, they have exceeded the fullest anticipations - the Beagle...having attained a speed of upwards of fourteen knots per hour; and the long and effective range of the new Lancaster oval guns with which they are armed has been proved by [the firing of] a shell, weighing 100 lb, [which] was fired a distance of 5000 yards'. This photograph, titled "Her Majesty's Despatch Gun-Boats, 1854," showcases the Royal Navy's Lynx, Beagle, Arrow, and Viper boats en route for the Black Sea during the Crimean War. These gun-boats, built by the esteemed firms of Messrs. Green and Messrs. Mare of Blackwall, represent the pinnacle of naval innovation at the time. The designers at the Admiralty meticulously planned every detail, and the builders faithfully executed their vision. The boats' sleek design and impressive speed surpassed all expectations. The Beagle, for instance, reached an astounding speed of over fourteen knots per hour. Moreover, the long and effective range of the new Lancaster oval guns, which arm these vessels, was proven through the firing of a 100-pound shell that traveled an impressive 5000 yards. The Despatch Gun-Boats were designed specifically for the swift transportation of dispatches, troops, and supplies to various locations along the coast. Their agility and firepower made them invaluable assets during the Crimean War, enabling the British forces to maintain a strong presence in the region and effectively communicate vital information between commanders. This photograph, taken from the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, offers a glimpse into the technological advancements and naval prowess of the time. The Despatch Gun-Boats were more than just vessels; they were symbols of Britain's unwavering commitment to maintaining its global influence and protecting its interests.
