EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the somber moment of Major-General Robert Henry Sale, a British soldier, mortally wounded at Moodkee (Mudkhi) in 1845. Major General Sale dedicated his life to serving in India and Afghanistan, rising through the ranks to become a respected leader in the army of the British East India Company. In this image, we see him clad in his military uniform, showcasing his authority and bravery. His horse stands faithfully by his side, symbolizing their unbreakable bond forged on countless battlefields. The intensity of the scene is palpable as Sale's wounds are evident; he fought valiantly but succumbed to them three days later on December 21st. This photograph not only commemorates an individual's sacrifice but also represents a significant chapter in history - the First Sikh War. It serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal realities faced by soldiers during that era and highlights their unwavering dedication to duty even amidst great peril. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and emotion to this nineteenth-century engraving. Its black-and-white tones evoke a sense of nostalgia while emphasizing the gravity of war and its consequences. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness one man's heroic struggle for king and country. Through this print, created by Robert Henry Sale himself or an unknown artist paying tribute to him, we gain insight into both personal sacrifice and broader historical events that shaped nations. It stands as a testament to courage under fire
