EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Male and female costume, c1350" takes us back in time to the medieval era. The image showcases a gentleman dressed in a close-fitting cote-hardi, adorned with a large-buckled hip-belt. Attached to his belt is a gypciere (pouch), through which a dagger is boldly thrust. His legs are clad in pointed boots with stylish garters. Over his left shoulder rests an elegant capuchon, or pointed hooded cape, embellished with ornamental bands around the neck. A short liripipe dangles from the cape, adding an extra touch of sophistication to his ensemble. The attention to detail in this illustration from "British Costume during 19 Centuries" by Mrs Charles H Ashdown (London, 1910) is remarkable. It beautifully captures the essence of medieval fashion worn by men during that period. This enchanting snapshot not only highlights the male attire but also provides insight into women's clothing at the time. Although not as prominently featured as her male counterpart, we catch glimpses of her headdress and wimple—a traditional head covering for women during this era. Emily Jessie Ashdown's skillful rendering transports us back centuries ago when such attire was commonplace in England. This print serves as a valuable historical reference for those interested in British fashion throughout different periods.
