A Maltese Milkman, 1876. Creator: Unknown
A Maltese Milkman, 1876. Engraving from a sketch by...a valued correspondent and amateur artist, Major W. O. Carlile, R.A...A complete cure to prevent the adulteration of London milk would be to adopt the Maltese custom of bringing the cow or goat to the door, and having the article direct from the animal. It is a plan which has much to recommend it: there is no need for cans; the cost or trouble of carrying the milk is done away with...men may be seen with goats following them along the streets of Valetta. These men give an occasional cry, which may be milk; and when a door opens and a girl with a jug appears, one of the goats is called, and submits patiently to have her ample udders squeezed into the dish. These goats follow the man, after the manner of flocks in the East, and they seem to be well up in all the details of the milk trade, and to know the particular doors where they will be wanted'. A Maltese Milkman, 1876
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing engraving that captures a unique aspect of daily life in Malta during the late 19th century. The image, created from a sketch by Major W.O. Carlile, R.A., was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1876. At the heart of this scene is a Maltese milkman, who is shown leading a goat on a leash as he makes his way through the streets of Valetta. The milkman's traditional attire – a white shirt, vest, and trousers – is contrasted by the goat's dark coat and bell collar. The milkman's expression is one of calm determination, while the goat appears patient and obedient. The caption accompanying the image highlights the advantages of the Maltese milk production system, which involved bringing the cow or goat directly to the door of the consumer. This practice eliminated the need for cans and reduced the cost and trouble of transporting milk. The milkman's goat follows him along the streets, seemingly well-versed in the milk trade and knowing which doors to visit. The image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing a time when milk was produced and delivered in a more natural and traditional way. It also underscores the importance of local customs and the role they play in shaping daily life. Today, this engraving serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural traditions that continue to thrive in Malta.
