Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: coiling the bars, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Manufacture of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal: coiling the bars, 1862. An Armstrong gun was a uniquely designed type of rifled breech-loading field and heavy gun designed by Sir William Armstrong and manufactured in England beginning in 1855 by the Elswick Ordnance Company and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, south-east London. Such guns involved a built-up gun construction system of a wrought-iron (later of mild steel) tube surrounded by a number of wrought-iron strengthening coils shrunk over the inner tube to keep it under compression. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a glimpse into the intricate manufacturing process of the Armstrong Gun at Woolwich Arsenal. Sir William Armstrong, a renowned British inventor and industrialist, revolutionized the armaments industry with his uniquely designed rifled breech-loading field and heavy guns. The Armstrong Gun, manufactured between 1855 and 1870 by the Elswick Ordnance Company and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, was a groundbreaking innovation. Its construction involved a built-up gun system, where a wrought-iron (later mild steel) tube was surrounded by a number of wrought-iron strengthening coils, shrunk over the inner tube to keep it under compression. In this image, we see the labor-intensive process of coiling the bars. Workers, dressed in protective aprons, carefully manipulate the hot iron bars, which have been heated in the furnace, and place them around the gun barrel. The coils are then shrunk in place using a hammer and flame. The danger and intensity of the process are palpable, as the workers focus intently on their task, ensuring the accuracy and strength of each gun produced. The Armstrong Gun's manufacturing process represented the pinnacle of craftsmanship and innovation during the Industrial Revolution, shaping the future of the armaments industry and the British armed forces.
