EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Marie Louise, the Duchess of Parma, Archduchess of Austria, and Empress of the French. The image captures a pivotal moment in history as she holds a letter from Napoleon Bonaparte requesting her hand in marriage. This request came after Napoleon divorced his first wife, Josephine, due to her inability to provide him with an heir. Marie Louise is depicted wearing an exquisite empire gown that accentuates her regal stature. Around her neck hangs a portrait that accompanied Napoleon's heartfelt letter. Her hair is styled elegantly, adding to the overall grace and beauty emanating from this portrait. The engraving was skillfully created by Nicolas Colibert and featured in Raymond Guyot's book "Napoleon" published in 1921. It offers us a glimpse into the life of one of history's most influential figures during the early 19th century. Marie Louise played a significant role in Napoleonic history as she became his second wife and bore him a son who would later be known as Napoleon II. This print serves as a reminder of their union and the political alliances it forged between France and Austria. With its intricate details captured through Colibert's masterful engraving technique, this image transports us back to an era filled with power struggles, love affairs, and grandeur. It immortalizes Marie Louise as both an empress adored by many and a woman caught up in the tumultuous world of politics during one of Europe's most transformative periods.
