Marigolds, single Anemone, Jasmine.... In 1939 the Print Club of Cleveland established a memorial collection for Donald Gray, president of the Club 1933-34. Since Mr. Gray was a landscape architect and author of the " Daily Garden" column for The Cleveland Press, a now defunct newspaper, the choice of 15 prints and one drawing of flower and fruit subjects was an appropriate tribute. These were the first botanical prints to enter the collection, which has grown to a large representation of more than 100 prints and related drawings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Marigolds, single Anemone, Jasmine. . . " is a beautiful creation by Jean-Baptiste I Monnoyer, a renowned French artist from the 17th century. The Print Club of Cleveland established a memorial collection in 1939 to honor Donald Gray, who served as the club's president in 1933-34. As Mr. Gray was not only a landscape architect but also an author of the popular "Daily Garden" column for The Cleveland Press, it was fitting to choose floral and fruit subjects for this tribute. These exquisite botanical prints were the first of their kind to enter the collection and have since grown to include over 100 prints and related drawings. This particular piece showcases Monnoyer's exceptional talent in etching and engraving techniques, enhanced with delicate hand coloring that brings these flowers to life. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details and vibrant colors meticulously captured by Monnoyer's skilled hand. It serves as a testament to his mastery as an artist and his ability to immortalize nature's beauty on paper. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable artwork stands as a testament not only to Monnoyer's legacy but also pays homage to Donald Gray's contributions within both artistry and horticulture realms.
