EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless beauty of Mdina, Malta's oldest town. Steeped in history and fortified by the Phoenicians around 1000 BC, Mdina has witnessed countless civilizations rise and fall within its ancient walls. Once serving as the site of the Governors palace during Roman times, this enchanting town earned its name "Mdina" meaning "Capital" when it came under Arab rule in c870. For centuries, Mdina stood as Malta's capital city until Valletta emerged in 1571. The architectural marvels within this historic gem are a testament to its rich heritage. One such masterpiece is the magnificent St Paul Cathedral, constructed between 1697 and 1702 by renowned Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa. The image captures Mdina's baroque charm with its stunning white-washed buildings adorned with domes that punctuate the skyline. The vibrant colors bring life to every corner of this picturesque cityscape while reflecting Malta's deep Christian roots. Photographer Peter Thompson skillfully portrays Mdina's allure through his lens, capturing both the grandeur of its seventeenth-century structures and eighteenth-century architectural elements. This print serves as a window into a bygone era where religion played an integral role in shaping society. As we admire this remarkable piece of artistry from Heritage Images, let us appreciate how it encapsulates not just a place but also an entire narrative woven into every stone and street of Mdina—a true testament to human ingenuity
