The medals of Queen Anne, 1813. Artist: Goldar
The medals of Queen Anne, 1813. Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite medals of Queen Anne, created in 1813 by the talented artist Goldar. Queen Anne, daughter of James II, ascended to the throne after the passing of William in 1702, becoming the last Stuart monarch. Her reign marked a significant shift in power from the crown to ministers and witnessed the emergence of a two-party political system. The profile portrait captures Queen Anne's regal presence as she gazes into eternity. The commemorative medals symbolize her rule over Great Britain and Ireland during a transformative period in history. They serve as a testament to her legacy as both a female ruler and an influential figure within British monarchy. Queen Anne faced numerous challenges throughout her reign, including her inability to produce an heir which led to a succession crisis. Parliament intervened by passing legislation that ensured the House of Hanover would inherit the throne instead of James Francis Edward Stuart, also known as the Catholic Old Pretender. Goldar's masterful engraving brings these historic artifacts to life on paper, preserving their beauty for generations to come. This print not only celebrates Queen Anne's reign but also pays homage to her significance within British history. As we admire this remarkable artwork, let us reflect upon Queen Anne's contributions and remember how she shaped Great Britain during one of its most pivotal eras.
