The Meeting of Orestes and Hermione, c. 1800. Creator: Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson (French

The Meeting of Orestes and Hermione, c. 1800. When Jacques-Louis David was approached to work on a new edition of Jean Racines plays, the great Neoclassical artist passed the task to his pupil Girodet, who excelled at illustrating literature. This highly refined drawing depicts a scene from Racines Andromaque, a complex tale of unrequited love and political treachery. Cleone introduces the love-blind Orestes to Hermione, who exploits his affection to make him do her bidding. Girodet skillfully contrasts Orestess eagerness and Hermiones calculating character. With folded arms, she turns away, standing like a statue between the columns of a cool marble interior. Yet Hermiones sly, backward glance alerts the viewer of her cunning manipulation, which eventually drives Orestes mad

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy-Trioson's masterpiece, "The Meeting of Orestes and Hermione" created around 1800. Commissioned to illustrate Jean Racine's plays, Girodet took on the task with great skill and precision. The drawing depicts a pivotal moment from Racine's Andromaque, a tale entwined with unrequited love and political deceit. Girodet expertly captures the contrasting personalities of Orestes and Hermione in this refined artwork. Orestes appears eager and infatuated, his emotions laid bare for all to see. Meanwhile, Hermione stands like an imposing statue amidst the cool marble interior, her folded arms symbolizing her calculated nature. However, it is Hermoine's sly backward glance that truly reveals her cunning manipulation. With just one look, she alerts viewers to her ulterior motives as she exploits Orestes' affection to further her own agenda—a treacherous act that ultimately drives him mad. Rendered using pen and brown/black ink along with point of brush techniques in brown/gray wash, black chalk, graphite, heightened with white gouache on cream wove paper; this drawing exemplifies Girodet's mastery over various mediums. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any commercial use), this remarkable print invites us into the world of Neoclassical art while immersing us in the complex narrative woven by Racine centuries ago.
