EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of Mercers Hall, located in the bustling Cheapside area of City of London. Created by Sandell Ltd in 1911, this artwork takes us back to the early 19th century when Mercers Hall stood as a symbol of trade and prosperity. The history behind this iconic building is rich and intriguing. The original hall was constructed between 1517 and 1524, along with the Mercers Chapel below it. Sadly, both were destroyed during the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666. However, resilience prevailed as a second hall designed by Edward Jarman and John Oliver opened its doors in May 1676. Over time, Mercers Hall underwent extensive refurbishments from 1877 to 1881, ensuring its timeless elegance remained intact. This print allows us to appreciate the exquisite architecture that defines this historic landmark. As we gaze at this image, we are transported to an era where bustling streets filled with people engaged in vibrant trade activities surrounded Mercers Hall. It serves as a reminder of Britain's strong commercial heritage while also showcasing the enduring beauty found within City of London's architectural landscape. With its intricate facade and prominent entrance on Ironmonger Lane, Mercers Hall stands tall as a testament to centuries-old guild traditions upheld by the esteemed livery company known as The Mercer Company. This remarkable engraving immortalizes not only Sir Walter Besant's book "London - The City" but also captures our imagination through its depiction of one of London's most significant historical landmarks.
