Merchant Taylors School, Suffolk-lane, Cannon-street, City, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Merchant Taylors School, Suffolk-lane, Cannon-street, City [of London], 1862. Merchant Taylors School has no endowment but what it owes to the public spirit of the Company with which it is so intimately associated. It has no claim...to be considered a "free school" in the popular acceptation of that term; but whatever it may require beyond the payment made by scholars is supplied from the Company's "general funds." To a great extent, therefore, it is a gratuitous school, for the instruction which it provides is of a class much superior to what could be afforded for the charges exacted of those who enjoy its privileges...The ancient pile, like so many other public and private edifices of London, was destroyed by the Great Fire. In its stead the present building and the house adjoining (which till 1856 was used as a residence for the Head Master) were erected, in 1675. In this case, as in that of the original purchase, the expense was defrayed by members of the Merchant Taylors Company, without trenching upon funds assigned to corporate purposes'. EDITORS COMMENTS
great photograph capturing the Merchant Taylors' School located on Suffolk-lane, Cannon-street, in the City of London, as it looked in 1862. The Merchant Taylors' School, though not technically a free school, holds a unique status as it relies heavily on the public generosity of the Merchant Taylors' Company for its funding. The institution does not charge scholars beyond the payment they make, with any additional expenses being covered by the Company's general funds. As a result, the education provided at Merchant Taylors' School is of a superior class, making it a gracious gift to those who attend. The history of Merchant Taylors' School is deeply intertwined with that of the City of London. The original building, like many other structures in the city, was lost in the Great Fire of 1666. In its place, the current edifice and the adjoining house (previously used as the Head Master's residence until 1856) were constructed in 1675. The expense for the new buildings was shouldered by the Merchant Taylors' Company members, demonstrating their commitment to the institution and its mission. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the architectural beauty and historical significance of Merchant Taylors' School. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Merchant Taylors' Company and their dedication to providing quality education to generations of students.
