Messers. Collard's Concert-room, Grosvenor-street, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Messers. Collard's Concert-room, Grosvenor-street, [London]. 1862. The firm of Collard and Collard ranks high among pianoforte-makers; and the increased operations of business consequent on their success have resulted in the Messrs. Collard opening a new establishment...so as to afford greater facilities to the fashionable and artistic world for inspecting their instruments...The saloons are of a spacious and highly-ornamental character, admirably adapted for the display of pianofortes...The prevailing style of architecture is the mixed Italian...The ceilings, designed by the celebrated brothers Adam, are alone worth a visit of inspection by connoisseurs of the decorative art, the judicious application of colour, under the masterly superintendence of Owen Jones, having greatly brought out and enhanced their original beauties...In a spirit of commendable liberality a magnificent saloon has been appropriated for a concert-room, which is gratuitously granted by Messrs. Collard for the use of artists, especially pianists, during the London season; and there is no saloon in the metropolis better adapted, from its acoustic properties, for musical effect, while the arrangements as to light and ventilation are perfect'. Messrs. Collard's Concert-room, Grosvenor-street, London, 1862: A Haven for Music and Artistry This photograph transports us back in time to Messrs. Collard's Concert-room, located on Grosvenor-street in London during the year 1862. The establishment, run by the esteemed Collard brothers, was renowned for its exceptional pianofortes and had recently expanded to accommodate the growing demand from the fashionable and artistic world. The newly opened concert-room was a testament to the brothers' commitment to showcasing their exquisite instruments in an environment that was not only visually stunning but also acoustically perfect for musical performances. The photograph reveals the grandeur of the space, with its spacious saloons adorned with intricate Italian architecture. The ceilings, designed by the celebrated Adam brothers, are a standout feature, their original beauty enhanced by the skillful use of color under the guidance of Owen Jones. The concert-room itself is a magnificent addition to the establishment, a gift to the artistic community. It was freely granted by Messrs. Collard for the use of artists, particularly pianists, during the London season. No other salon in the metropolis could boast of such ideal acoustic properties, making it the go-to venue for musical performances.
