Method of refuelling aircraft devised by Sir Alan Cobham, c1936 (c1937)
Method of refuelling aircraft devised by Sir Alan Cobham, c1936 (c1937). Alan John Cobham (1894-1973) was an English aviation pioneer. In 1921 he made a 5000 mile air tour of Europe, visiting 17 cities in 3 weeks. Cobham developed a method of refuelling aircraft whilst in the air, greatly increasing the distance of air travel. Trials stopped at the outbreak of World War II but interest was successfully revived by the RAF and the US Army Air Forces in 1945. From Wonders of World Aviation, Vol. 1, by Clarence Winchester. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a groundbreaking moment in aviation history - the method of refuelling aircraft devised by Sir Alan Cobham. In the late 1930s, this British aviation pioneer revolutionized air travel by developing a technique to refuel planes while they were still in flight. This innovation allowed for significantly longer distances to be covered, opening up new possibilities for exploration and transportation. Sir Alan Cobham's achievements extended beyond his revolutionary refuelling method. In 1921, he embarked on an impressive 5000-mile air tour of Europe, visiting numerous cities within just three weeks. His daring spirit and determination propelled him to become one of the most influential figures in early aviation. Although trials of his refuelling technique were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, interest was reignited after the war by both the RAF and the US Army Air Forces. This photograph serves as a testament to Sir Alan Cobham's visionary ideas that continued to shape aviation long after its initial conception. The monochrome image showcases a man standing beside an aircraft, holding onto a hose that connects it with another plane mid-flight. It symbolizes not only technological advancement but also human ingenuity and perseverance in pushing boundaries. Preserved through time, this remarkable print from Clarence Winchester's "Wonders of World Aviation" offers us a glimpse into an era when dreams took flight and paved the way for modern air transport as we know it today.
