EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Miguel Tacon, a prominent figure in Cuban history during the early 19th century. Born in Cartagena, Spain in 1775, Tacon served as the captain of Cuba from 1834 to 1838. However, his rule was marked by despotic tendencies and oppressive measures. Tacon's authoritarian regime saw him expel the renowned patriot Jose Antonio Saco and suppress liberal ideas by abolishing the magazine Revista bimestre de Cuba. He even resorted to deporting hundreds of native sons who dared to challenge his autocratic rule. In this monochrome portrait captured in the 1920s, we see General Miguel Tacon exuding an air of authority and power. His spectacles lend an intellectual aura to his stern countenance while his royal attire symbolizes his position within society. The embroidered collar and jacket adorned with medals hint at Tacon's aristocratic background and further emphasize his status as a marquis or duke. This image serves as a reminder of both colonialism's influence on Cuba and Tacon's role as a despotic ruler during this tumultuous period. Preserved through time on a cigar card from "History of Cuba" this print offers us a glimpse into one man's controversial legacy that shaped North and Central America. It stands as a testament to the complex history of struggle for freedom against oppression, where individuals like Jose Antonio Saco fought bravely against figures like Miguel Tacon for their country's liberty.
