EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant piece of history - a military fatigue shirt worn by James E. Brown, an African-American soldier in the 20th Engineer Brigade during the Vietnam War. The olive green short sleeve shirt showcases the button-down style that was commonly worn by soldiers at that time. Despite its age and wear, this shirt tells a powerful story. The missing plastic buttons on the front are evidence of the countless battles and challenges faced by Brown during his service. The four pockets on the front, each with flaps and two-button closures, once held essential items for survival in combat zones. The heavily worn condition of this garment speaks volumes about its owner's dedication and sacrifice. A large faded patch covers the right side, perhaps indicating repairs made to extend its lifespan amidst harsh conditions. Holes can be seen throughout - reminders of bullets dodged or close calls experienced. Notably, patches reading "BROWN" over one pocket and "U. S. Army" over another proudly display his identity as both an individual soldier and a representative of his country's armed forces. Adorned with shoulder insignias representing United States Military Assistance Command (USMAC) and 20th Engineer Brigade respectively, this fatigue shirt symbolizes not only James E. Brown's personal journey but also his contribution to larger military operations. Preserved through time by Bonham Manufacturing Company Inc. , this photograph allows us to reflect upon the bravery and resilience displayed by soldiers like James E. Brown during one of America's most challenging conflicts – reminding us never to forget their sacrifices for our freedom.
