This print showcases a miniature of a manuscript offered by Talbot and Margaret of Anjou in the 15th century. Created by Charaire et fils, this exquisite artwork provides a glimpse into the rich history of medieval England and France. Margaret of Anjou, Queen Consort to King Henry VI of England, was an influential figure during the Wars of the Roses. She led the Lancastrian faction with great determination. John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, played a crucial role as an English military commander during the Hundred Years War and served as Constable of France. In 1445, upon their marriage, Talbot presented Margaret with a Book of Romance known as the Shrewsbury Book. This illuminated manuscript became a treasured wedding present for Margaret and symbolized their union. The print captures not only the historical significance but also highlights its artistic beauty. The intricate details within this religious-themed manuscript showcase both Christian symbolism and medieval artistry. As we admire this monochrome engraving from La France et les Francais à Travers les Siècles (Volume II), we are transported back to fifteenth-century Europe—a time when literature flourished alongside political alliances.
