Molten steel being channelled at the Stanton Steel Works, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, 1962

Molten steel being channelled at the Stanton Steel Works, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, 1962. Iron production had taken place in the Ilkeston area since Roman times and after the construction of the areas first blast furnace in 1788 the area established itself as a centre for steel production. The Stanton Ironworks was created in 1846 when a Chesterfield man, Benjamin Smith and his son Josiah, brought three blast furnaces into production alongside the banks of the Nutbrook Canal. Five new furnaces were brought into production by 1987 and the site became known as the Old Works. The company experienced difficulties and a series of takeovers followed. It was eventually taken over by Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd and was merged with the Staveley Iron and Chemical Company Ltd in 1960 to form Stanton and Staveley, which was later incorporated into the British Steel Co. The company produced bomb casings and gun barrels during the Second World War in addition to a wide variety of other products, which included tube products, street furniture and tunneling components, which were used in the construction of the London Underground and the Mersey Tunnel. By the late 2000s the site was derelict and scheduled for demolition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of molten steel being channeled at the historic Stanton Steel Works in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, in 1962. The iron production industry had flourished in this area since Roman times, and with the establishment of the first blast furnace in 1788, Ilkeston became renowned as a hub for steel manufacturing. The Stanton Ironworks was founded by Benjamin Smith and his son Josiah in 1846 along the banks of Nutbrook Canal. Initially operating three blast furnaces, it expanded over time to include five more furnaces by 1987, earning it the moniker "Old Works". However, financial challenges plagued the company leading to several takeovers. Eventually merging with Staveley Iron and Chemical Company Ltd in 1960 under Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd's ownership, it formed Stanton and Staveley before becoming part of British Steel Co. During World War II, this significant industrial site played a vital role producing bomb casings and gun barrels alongside an array of other products like tube products used for construction projects such as London Underground and Mersey Tunnel. Sadly, by the late 2000s, neglect had befallen this once-thriving location which now stands derelict awaiting demolition. This evocative image serves as a testament to both the rich history of steel production that unfolded within these walls throughout centuries past and also highlights its eventual decline due to changing economic circumstances.
