Monument to the Late Earl of Ellesmere to be raised at Worsley, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Monument to the Late Earl of Ellesmere to be raised at Worsley, 1858. About 161 models and designs were sent for competition...The committee selected what they considered the six best designs, which they submitted to Mr. Edward Barry of London, who, without knowing their authors, adjudged the first prize to Messrs. Driver and Webber, of London, who will have to erect and complete the monument for £1800...[The memorial] is a tower of Transition Gothic character, and is composed of an octagonal shaft, rising 132 feet from an enriched base, which is approached by bold stone steps, forming a spacious platform and footing to the whole 49 feet square...The shafts of detached columns are formed of marble, with carved caps and moulded bases...At the top of the shaft a room is constructed, and lighted on each face by deeply-recessed windows. This room commands an extended view, and may be used with advantage as an observatory, if desired...When completed the monument will, it is said, be visible from six counties'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Monument to the Late Earl of Ellesmere, which was planned to be erected at Worsley in 1858. The design competition for the monument attracted approximately 161 submissions, and after careful consideration, the committee selected the six most promising designs. Among these, the first prize was awarded to Messrs. Driver and Webber of London, who were tasked with constructing and completing the monument for a total cost of £1800. The Monument to the Late Earl of Ellesmere is a striking Transition Gothic structure, standing tall at 132 feet from its enriched base. Approached by bold stone steps, the base measures 49 feet square and provides a spacious platform for visitors. The detached columns of the shaft are formed of marble, adorned with carved caps and moulded bases. At the top of the shaft, a room has been constructed, offering a panoramic view that extends across six counties. This room, which is illuminated by deeply-recessed windows on each face, can be used as an observatory if desired. The monument's grandeur and visibility from a great distance were intended to pay tribute to the Late Earl of Ellesmere's significant contributions and influence. The Monument to the Late Earl of Ellesmere, as depicted in this photograph, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess and artistic vision of its creators, Messrs. Driver and Webber, and the enduring legacy of the Earl of Ellesmere.
