Moose-hunting in Canada - a Bull Moose feeding, 1858. Male moose...feeding among the lily-pods in autumn...The moose is the largest of the deer tribe, sometimes attaining the weight of one thousand pounds, and is the largest wild animal frequenting the forests of America...During the summer months moose are fond of frequenting the lakes and rivers, partly for the purpose of escaping from the tormenting flies and to avoid injuring their antlers, but chiefly because such localities afford an abundance of grassy food...The rutting season commences in September, when the males do a great deal of hard fighting...Their antlers begin to sprout in April, and complete their growth in July; they sometimes expand five feet nine inches, and the weight of a large pair may be stated at seventy pounds'. EDITORS COMMENTS
is an exquisite 19th-century engraving that captures the essence of the Canadian wilderness and the majesty of the North American moose. The image depicts a bull moose, the largest wild animal inhabiting the forests of America, feeding among the lily-pods in autumn. The moose, scientifically known as Alces americanus, can weigh up to one thousand pounds and is the largest member of the deer tribe. During the summer months, these gentle giants are often found near lakes and rivers to escape the tormenting flies and to access an abundant supply of grassy food. As September approaches, the rutting season begins, and the males engage in intense fighting. The antlers, which begin to sprout in April and complete their growth in July, are a significant factor in these battles. These impressive structures can expand up to five feet nine inches, with a weight of seventy pounds for a large pair. This engraving, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a glimpse into the natural world of Canada and the beauty of the moose in its habitat. The black and white image, with its intricate details, transports us back in time and invites us to appreciate the grandeur of this magnificent creature. The moose's serene expression and the serene autumnal scene around it make for a captivating visual experience. This print is a testament to the rich natural history of Canada and the enduring allure of the wilderness. From the pages of the "Illustrated London News," this engraving is a treasure for collectors of wildlife art and a reminder of the wonders of the natural world.
