Mount Vesuvius, with Torre Annunziata (?), c.1811. Creator: Josephus Augustus Knip
Mount Vesuvius, with Torre Annunziata (?), c.1811. Knip's annotation led to some confusion. While there is a place called Annunziata, it lies more to the south, farther south even than Naples, on the same peninsula as Sorrento. The place depicted here is clearly situated at the foot of the volcano near Naples. This must be Torre Annunziata, on the southern slope of Mount Vesuvius. It is now an industrial town

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This stunning 19th century watercolor and graphite drawing by Josephus Augustus Knip depicts the iconic Mount Vesuvius in Italy, with the town of Torre Annunziata situated at its foot. The intricate details of the volcanic mountain and its surrounding landscape are beautifully rendered in watercolor and graphite, capturing the raw power and majesty of this natural wonder. Knip's annotation has led to some confusion, as there is indeed a place called Torre Annunziata, but it lies more to the south, farther from Naples, on the same peninsula as Sorrento. However, the location depicted in this artwork is clearly situated at the foot of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. Today, Torre Annunziata is an industrial town, but in the early 19th century, it was a quaint fishing village nestled at the base of the mountain. The Dutch artist, Knip, masterfully captures the essence of this Italian scene, with the vibrant colors of the buildings contrasting against the muted tones of the mountain and the clear blue water in the foreground. This artwork is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Europe during the 19th century and a reminder of the natural beauty that continues to inspire artists and travelers alike."
