EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Mr Henry Blacker, the renowned British Giant of the 18th century. Born in 1724 near Cuckfield, Sussex, Blacker stood an astonishing seven feet four inches tall, making him the tallest man ever to exhibit in England. With great pride and self-proclaimed title as the "British Giant" he embarked on his exhibiting career in London in 1751. The image captures a group of men gathered indoors, perhaps at an exhibition or social gathering. Mr Henry Blacker stands prominently among them, his towering height emphasized by his commanding presence. Dressed impeccably in period clothing including a tricorn hat and jacket, he exudes confidence and elegance despite being labeled as a freak show attraction. Although very little is known about Blacker's life after retiring from public exhibitions, this engraving immortalizes him during his prime years as a spectacle for curious audiences. The photograph serves as a testament to both the fascination with extraordinary individuals during the 19th century and society's evolving perception of human diversity. Preserved within The Strand Magazine from July to December 1894, this historical artifact offers us a glimpse into an era when giants walked amongst ordinary men. It reminds us that even though time may have passed since Mr Henry Blacker captured people's imaginations with his extraordinary stature, his legacy lives on through images like these held dear by collectors who appreciate our shared history.
