Mt. Fuji through Pines, late 1700s-early 1800s. Creator: Kubo Shunman (1757-1820)
Mt. Fuji through Pines, late 1700s-early 1800s. Kubo Shunman dashed off this loose image of Mt. Fuji viewed in the distance from behind pine trees as a performance painting, or sekiga. He did it on the spot in the company of members of his poetry club. Six of them, including the clubs founder Yadoya no Meshimori (Rokujuen, 1753-1830), added kyoka poems, 31-syllable poems like the classical Japanese waka poem in form, but with a heavy emphasis on humor. Shunman jotted down a poem as well, in the bottom right corner of the painting, before signing and sealing it. Each poem takes the painted image as its point of departure

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mt. Fuji through Pines, late 1700s-early 1800s" by Kubo Shunman takes us back to the Edo period in Japan. In this performance painting, or sekiga, Shunman skillfully captures the majestic beauty of Mt. Fuji as seen from behind a cluster of pine trees. The loose brushstrokes and vibrant colors bring life to the scene, transporting viewers to a serene landscape. What makes this artwork even more intriguing is its collaborative nature. Shunman created this piece on the spot while accompanied by members of his poetry club. Six poets, including Yadoya no Meshimori (Rokujuen), founder of the club, added kyoka poems that humorously complemented the painted image. In harmony with their wordsmithing companionship, Shunman himself jotted down a poem in the bottom right corner before signing and sealing it. This hanging scroll showcases not only artistic talent but also cultural significance during an important era in Japanese history. As we admire this ink and color masterpiece on silk at The Cleveland Museum of Art, we are reminded of how art can transcend time and connect us with past traditions. Heritage Art/Heritage Images presents this remarkable print for our appreciation, allowing us to delve into Japan's rich heritage through visual storytelling captured by Kubo Shunman's skilled hand.
