EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken on 6 July 1944, Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II, stands proudly beside her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (later the Duchess of York), as they visit a USAAF (United States Army Air Forces) bomber station. The occasion was the naming and christening of a new Flying Fortress, named "Rose of York," in honor of the Princess. Dressed in a simple yet elegant dress, Princess Elizabeth, who was only 19 years old at the time, is seen here with a bouquet of white roses in her hands. Her father, King George VI, wears his military uniform, complete with medals and decorations, while her mother, the Queen, dons a stylish hat and coat. Joining them in this historic moment is Lt.-General Doolittle, the commander of the 8th Air Force, who looks on with admiration and respect as the future monarch performs the traditional ceremony of christening the aircraft with a bottle of champagne. This poignant image captures the spirit of the war years, with the royal family showing their support for the Allied forces and the important role that aviation played in the defense of the country. It is a reminder of a time when the future monarch was just a young princess, and the world was on the brink of great change.
