EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant piece of history - the US Navy dress uniform pants worn by Admiral Michelle Howard in 1999. Admiral Howard, born in 1960, made groundbreaking strides as the first African-American woman to command a United States Navy ship. Her remarkable achievements led to her appointment as Vice Chief of Naval Operations in 2014, making her the second highest-ranking officer in the US Navy. The pants themselves are a testament to both style and functionality. Made from black synthetic fabric, they feature a straight leg design and close at the left side waist with a zipper and black plastic button. A single exterior inset pocket is located on the right front waist for added convenience. Noteworthy details include a thin waistband lined with white ribbon adorned with an elegant tan decorative woven design. The absence of lining adds to their lightweight nature. Displayed alongside an informative size and style tag sewn at the interior backside, these pants represent more than just clothing; they symbolize courage, resilience, and determination. Preserved by Weintraub Brothers Company Inc. , this artifact now finds its place within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). It serves as a reminder of Admiral Michelle Howard's extraordinary contributions to naval warfare while also celebrating her cultural heritage as an influential figure in American history.
