New Alabaster Screen, in Ely Cathedral, 1854. Creator: Unknown

New Alabaster Screen, in Ely Cathedral, 1854. Illustration of the...new Altar-screen (now in course of erection), which has been designed by Mr. G. G. Scott; the centre, over the altar-table being of alabaster, and the wings of stone. The subjects are from the Life of Our Saviour: in the centre, the Last Supper, the Entry into Jerusalem, Washing the Disciples Feet, the Agony in the Garden, and Bearing the Cross. At the opening of the tabernacle work are Angels, holding emblems of the Crucifixion; and in the centre, and crowning the canopies, is Christ, with Moses and Elias. By a judicious treatment of the Evangelistic symbols in the crocheting of the four side gables, a reference has been sustained between this ornamentation and the figures of the Evangelists which surmount these gables. The twisted pillars are enriched by mosaic work of coloured pebbles...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the hallowed halls of Ely Cathedral in England, dates back to 1854. The photograph captures the newly installed Alabaster Screen, designed by the renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. The central panel, situated above the altar-table, is made of precious alabaster, while the wings are crafted from stone. The subjects depicted on the screen derive from the Life of Our Saviour: the Last Supper, Entry into Jerusalem, Washing the Disciples' Feet, Agony in the Garden, and Bearing the Cross. Angels, holding emblems of the Crucifixion, adorn the opening of the tabernacle work. In the center and crowning the canopies, Christ is depicted with Moses and Elias. The intricate crocheting of the four side gables refers to the Evangelistic symbols, creating a harmonious blend of ornamentation and figures of the Evangelists that surmount these gables. The twisted pillars are further embellished with mosaic work of coloured pebbles. This magnificent piece, showcased in the Illustrated London News in 1854, is a testament to the Gothic Revival and Victorian era's dedication to preserving and enhancing the grandeur of religious institutions. Sir George Gilbert Scott's masterful design seamlessly combines traditional Gothic elements with contemporary craftsmanship, resulting in a breathtaking interior decoration that continues to inspire awe and reverence in visitors to this day.
