EDITORS COMMENTS
New Cattle-Market, Reading, 1850: A Transformative Moment in Victorian England's Agricultural Trade This image, hailing from the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases the New Cattle-Market under construction in Reading, Berkshire, England. The market, designed by Mr. B. Clacy, architect of Reading, was a significant development in the agricultural trade of the time. The site, a large meadow adjacent to the Great Western and Berks and Hants Railways, was chosen for its accessibility. The market was raised above flood level with chalk to ensure protection from potential inundations. The entire market was to be fitted with wrought iron structures, including calf pens roofed with corrugated zinc and iron columns. The earthwork was being executed by Messrs. Orton and Son, while the entire contract was awarded to Messrs. Barnes and Turner of Reading for £1600. The first brick was laid by Mr. Haslam, chairman of the committee, in a ceremony attended by the workmen, who expressed their approval with hearty cheers. The New Cattle-Market represented a pivotal moment in the agricultural trade of the Victorian era. Its strategic location near the railways facilitated the efficient transportation of livestock, making it an essential hub for farmers and traders. The market's modern design, featuring advanced materials like wrought iron and zinc, underscored the industrial progress of the time. This engraving, a testament to the era's architectural and industrial achievements, offers a glimpse into the transformative impact of the railway system on agriculture and trade in 19th century Britain.
