New Church of Il Santissimo Redentore, at Rome, (interior), 1856. View of...the Church of II Santissimo Redentore, now in course of erection from the designs of [English architect] Mr. George G. [sic] Wigley...The Redemptorist Fathers (an order founded at the end of the last century, by the well-known theological writer, St. Alphonsus Liguori) have lately purchased the Villa Caserta, to make it their head-quarters in the Eternal City, and have added to the existing buildings the church which is the subject of our Illustration. The general dimensions of the church are 200 Roman palms (146 feet) in length, by 70 palms (51 feet) in width, and 70 palms in height. The estimated cost is 18, 000 Roman scudi (about £4000). The style of the church is an adaptation of Italian Gothic, of a very simple character, studied from mediaeval buildings at Subiaco and other places in the neighbourhood of Rome'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning interior photograph captures the beauty and grandeur of the New Church of Il Santissimo Redentore in Rome, as it was under construction in 1856. Designed by English architect George G. Wigley, the church was commissioned by the Redemptorist Fathers, a religious order founded in the late 18th century by St. Alphonsus Liguori. The order had recently acquired the Villa Caserta in Rome, where they established their headquarters and added the church as an addition to the existing buildings. Measuring 200 Roman palms in length, 70 palms in width, and 70 palms in height, the church boasted impressive dimensions. The estimated cost of construction was 18,000 Roman scudi, which is approximately £4000 in modern currency. The architectural style of the church was inspired by Italian Gothic architecture, specifically from mediaeval buildings in Subiaco and other nearby areas of Rome. The interior of the church is a breathtaking display of intricate details and ornate decorations, with magnificent arches and columns supporting the vaulted ceiling. The simple yet elegant design of the church reflects the religious order's commitment to preserving the rich architectural heritage of Italy while creating a sacred space for worship. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing us with a glimpse of the meticulous process of constructing a magnificent place of worship in the heart of Rome over 165 years ago.
