New church, at Kensall Green, 1844. Creator: Unknown

New church, at Kensall Green, 1844. The church of St John the Evangelist at Kensal Green in London:built in the Anglo-Norman style, of black brick, relieved with flint; the western front has two square towers, with high-pitched roofs, with a pinnacle at each angle, surmounted with a cross, as is also the main roof. Each tower has three stories, the upper most of which has belfry windows. These towers flank the centre also of three stories; the lowest is occupied by a gabled porch, with a deeply-recessed doorway, the columns of which are of stone, but most of the mouldings of the arches are worked in bricks.... EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent new church of St John the Evangelist at Kensal Green in London, built in 1844. The creator remains unknown, but their talent for capturing architectural beauty is undeniable. The church stands proudly in the Anglo-Norman style, constructed with black brick that contrasts beautifully against the flint accents. Its western front boasts two square towers adorned with high-pitched roofs and elegant pinnacles at each angle, all crowned by crosses that reach towards the heavens. Each tower consists of three stories, with belfry windows gracing the uppermost level. Flanking the center are two additional three-story sections, adding to the grandeur of this religious sanctuary. The lowest story on one side features a gabled porch with a deeply-recessed doorway supported by stone columns. Remarkably, most arches' intricate brickwork molds seamlessly into this stunning entrance. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" transports us back to Victorian England when religion played an integral role in society's fabric. It captures not only a physical structure but also reflects upon centuries-old traditions and spiritual devotion. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we can appreciate both its historical significance and artistic merit. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship while inviting us to ponder our own beliefs and connections to faith throughout time.
