The new Church of St. Nicholas at Hamburg, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The new Church of St. Nicholas at Hamburg, 1845. View of a neo-Gothic church in Germany....at the base of the tower, we are struck with the deeply recessed porch and its sculptural enrichments; thence the eye rises to the magnificent western window of the belfry and its profusely embellished angles; the enriched canopies at the spring of the spire; its bristling finials, its crocketed ribs, perforation, and tracery, carry the admiration of the beholder to the extreme point. Returning to the main body of the edifice, what an assemblage of enrichment bursts upon the eye in the gables, buttresses, pierced parapets, pinnacles, crosses, and finials; whilst the elegant lantern surmounting the choir roof adds grace to the effect of the entire design. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent new Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg, Germany, as it stood proudly in 1845. The neo-Gothic architecture is a sight to behold, with its intricate details and impressive scale. As our gaze falls upon the tower's base, we are immediately struck by the deeply recessed porch adorned with sculptural enrichments. Our eyes then ascend to the belfry's western window, which captivates us with its profuse embellishments and ornate angles. The spire itself is a marvel of design, boasting enriched canopies, bristling finials, crocketed ribs, perforation, and tracery that leave us in awe. Turning our attention back to the main body of the church reveals an array of stunning adornments: gables, buttresses, pierced parapets, pinnacles crosses, and finials all contribute to an overwhelming sense of grandeur. Adding grace to this already breathtaking composition is an elegant lantern crowning the choir roof. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" transports us back to a time when Victorian Gothic architecture was at its peak. It serves as a testament not only to human creativity but also to religious devotion during this period. The unknown creator behind this remarkable image has captured both the beauty and significance of this architectural masterpiece for generations to come.
