New Court of the Louvre, Paris, 1856. Creator: Unknown
New Court of the Louvre, Paris, 1856. View of...that portion which has been most recently finished, and completes the great square contained within the Carrousel, the facade of the old Louvre, and the new constructions...the Pavilion at the corner of the Oratoire has also been finished, as well as the line of buildings which unites it with the ancient palace. It has been decided by the Emperor that the library of the Louvre and the permanent Exposition should be placed in the transverse line of buildings joining the Pavilion, on the square of the Palais Royal, with that on the Place Napoleon...two green inclosures, like our squares, have been laid out...They are separated by a large esplanade, and surrounded by a pavement of granite. A similar pavement runs the whole length of the new buildings'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, showcases the New Court of the Louvre in Paris during its construction phase. The image highlights that portion of the building which had recently been completed, marking the finish of the great square contained within the Carrousel, the facade of the old Louvre, and the new constructions. The Pavilion at the corner of the Oratoire has also been finished, as well as the line of buildings which unites it with the ancient palace. The Emperor had made the decision to house the library of the Louvre and the permanent Exposition in the transverse line of buildings joining the Pavilion, on the square of the Palais Royal, with that on Place Napoleon. Two green enclosures, reminiscent of our modern-day squares, have been laid out, separated by a large esplanade, and surrounded by a pavement of granite. A similar pavement runs the whole length of the new buildings. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, offers a glimpse into the neoclassical architectural marvel that was taking shape in Paris. The image captures the excitement of the construction process and the anticipation of the grandeur that the New Court of the Louvre was destined to bring. The photograph is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of France, attracting tourists and art enthusiasts from around the world even in its incomplete state.
