New Dresses for the Artillery, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photographic print showcasing the new uniform designs for the British Army, specifically for the Artillery, Hussars, and Rifles. The creator of this image is unknown, but the information accompanying it was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854. The new costumes were designed by the firm of Hamburger, Rogers, and Co., marking a significant departure from the previous uniforms. For the Royal Horse Artillery, the new uniforms would feature an unencumbered design, eliminating the profusion of lace that was both expensive and useless. The full-dress uniform would include a rich gold lace shoulder-belt, an embroidered pouch, and a motto underneath, all edged with gold lace. The ordinary head-dress would be continued, but the helmet of black felt would now bear the Royal Arms and a gun in front, along with figured brass ornaments. A white horsehair Dragoon plume would replace the Albert cap for full-dress. The Foot Artillery would wear a tunic with little lace, a black felt helmet with the Royal Arms and a gun in front, and a white horsehair Dragoon plume for full-dress. The Albert cap was replaced. This photographic print offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of military uniforms during the 19th century, showcasing the transition from ornate, lace-heavy designs to more practical and streamlined uniforms.
