New drinking-fountain in Fleet Street, 1860. Creator: Unknown
New drinking-fountain in Fleet Street, [London], 1860. The interesting ceremony of opening a new drinking-fountain, erected at the expense of Sir James Duke, Bart. M.P. and Alderman of the ward of Farringdon Without, in front of the parish church of St. Dunstan-in-the-West, took place on Wednesday week in the presence of Sir James Duke, Bart. the Rev. Mr. Auriol, the Rector, and numerous other gentlemen. The design is of the classic order, the base being surmounted by a niche, at the top of which is a dolphin's head with the water issuing from the mouth. Round the basin are festoons of flowers, carved in beautiful marble. The ground is of Welsh marble, and all the rest of Italian marble. Round the basin is the following inscription: "The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life", and round the edge of the niche are these words: "The gift of Sir James Duke, Bart. M.P. Alderman of this Ward." On the top comers are two ovals, in one of which are these words, "Elected Lord Mayor, 1848;" and in the other, "Elected M.P. for London, 1849." The whole is surmounted by a white marble shield, bearing the arms of Sir James Duke and the insignia of the mayoralty'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph, taken in 1860, showcases the grand opening ceremony of a new drinking-fountain in Fleet Street, London. The fountain was generously funded by Sir James Duke, Baronet and Alderman of Farringdon Without, in front of St. Dunstan-in-the-West parish church. The classical design of the fountain features a base topped with a niche, adorned by a dolphin's head from which water flows. The basin is encircled by intricately carved marble festoons of flowers. The ground is made of Welsh marble, while the rest is of Italian marble. The inscription on the basin reads, "The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life," and around the niche edge, "The gift of Sir James Duke, Bart. M.P. Alderman of this Ward." The top corners display two ovals, one bearing the inscription, "Elected Lord Mayor, 1848," and the other, "Elected M.P. for London, 1849." The entire structure is crowned by a white marble shield, displaying Sir James Duke's arms and the mayoral insignia." This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and grandeur of Victorian-era London. The new drinking-fountain, a charitable contribution by Sir James Duke, would have provided much-needed relief to the thirsty crowds of the bustling Fleet Street. The intricate design and beautiful materials used in its construction reflect the pride and wealth of the community at the time. The opening ceremony, attended by Sir James Duke, the reverend Mr. Auriol, and other esteemed gentlemen, would have been an occasion of great celebration and civic pride.
