The New French Treaty - No. II. Lyons and French Silks, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The New French Treaty - No. II. Lyons and French Silks, 1862. View of the Croix Rousse...[this] was for a very long period the head-quarters of the population of canuts, or workmen employed as weavers in the silk trade. It is situated on a steep hillside leading down into the city...M. Thorigny's drawing faithfully depicts the present appearance of the new and old parts of this ancient portion of Lyons. A Canut at Home...Although mostly well disposed, the canuts have always taken a prominent part in the revolutionary movements that have so frequently broken out at Lyons, thrown into them, no doubt, by the distress from which they so often suffer. A Canuse at her Loom...many females are also employed at the looms and in the preparation of the silks, and are often as skilful in throwing the shuttle some twelve thousand times a day as their male competitors. When a canut is a married man his spouse usually operates at one of her "master's" looms. Interior of a Factory...[showing] the weaver at work on a current article, which, issues from his loom ready for the market, with the exception of the last finish, which is given to it in a room set apart for that purpose'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The New French Treaty - No. II., Lyons and French Silks, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photographic print that offers a glimpse into the vibrant and industrious world of the silk weavers, or canuts, in Lyons, France during the mid-19th century. The image, created by an unknown photographer, captures the picturesque view of the Croix Rousse district, a historic area known for its steep hillside and the headquarters of the silk trade workers. The scene unfolds with a panoramic view of the Croix Rousse, where the old and new parts of this ancient neighborhood are depicted. The hillside is dotted with buildings, some old and worn, others new and modern, all interconnected by a maze of narrow streets. The view is particularly noteworthy as it was the birthplace of the canuts, who for a long time made their homes and worked in this area. The photograph also includes three vignettes that provide a closer look at the daily life of the canuts. The first vignette shows a canut at home, suggesting that despite their revolutionary tendencies, they also had personal lives outside of the factories. The second vignette depicts a canuse, or female weaver, at her loom, emphasizing the gender equality in the silk trade, where women were just as skilled as men. Lastly, the third vignette offers a glimpse into the interior of a factory, where a weaver is seen at work, creating intricate patterns on silk fabric, which would later be finished in a separate room. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the canuts and their role in the silk trade during a period of significant social and industrial change. It is a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of Lyons as the silk capital of the world.
