New Letter-Box, at Paris, 1850. Creator: Unknown
New Letter-Box, at Paris, 1850. The reduction of the rate of postage in France has suggested the adoption of a new form of Letter-box from Belgium, a specimen of which has been erected in the Rue de la Paix, at Paris. It consists of a bronzed columnar design raised upon a granite socle; the opening for the receipt of the letters being in the upper portion of the column, and having a projection to keep out the rain; a door for the removal of the letters being provided towards the base'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1850, captures the allure of Paris's newly installed New Letter-Box. The reduction of postage rates in France had led to the adoption of a novel letter-box design from Belgium, which was promptly erected in the Rue de la Paix. The letter-box, depicted here in its back view, is a bronzed columnar structure raised upon a granite socle. The opening for the receipt of letters is situated in the upper portion of the column, complete with a projection to keep out the rain. A door for the removal of letters is conveniently located towards the base. The innovative design, which was widely reported in newspapers such as the Illustrated London News, was a testament to the advancements in communication during the Victorian era. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion of the time, with a woman in a full-length dress and bonnet, standing beside the letter-box, adding a sense of scale and context to the image. The New Letter-Box, with its elegant and functional design, became a symbol of progress and convenience in the rapidly changing world of the 19th century.
