New schools at Long Ashton, near Bristol, 1862. Creator: Unknown
New schools at Long Ashton, near Bristol, 1862. The new parochial schools building comprises a boys and girls school, with two fine classrooms, cap and cloak rooms, and a master's house...It has suitable playgrounds, and the whole is very prettily surrounded with handsome railings in front, and neat fences at the sides and back. The erection is in the Early Decorated style, of Nailsea pennant, with freestone dressings, and is ornamented with a handsome bell turret, supported with polished Purbeck marble columns, with carved capitals. The masonry is of the best description, the details have been carried out with much care and fidelity, and the establishment presents an imposing appearance. Situated on a gentle eminence, surrounded with delightful, undulated, and pleasantly wooded country, it is a conspicuous and agreeable object, materially enriching the picturesque landscape. The architect is Mr. J. Wilson, F.S.A. of Bath, and the plan upon which the schools have been built has been much and justly commended...The builders are Messrs. E. and J. Tucker, of Ashton, and they have carried out their contract in an admirable manner'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph that showcases the impressive architecture of two newly built parochial schools. The image, taken in 1862, depicts a boys' and girls' school, each with their own fine classrooms, cap and cloak rooms, and a master's house. The establishment is surrounded by suitable playgrounds, and the entire building is enclosed by handsome railings in front, and neat fences at the sides and back. The schools are built in the Early Decorated style, using Nailsea pennant for the masonry and freestone for the dressings. The building's most striking feature is the handsome bell turret, which is supported by polished Purbeck marble columns with carved capitals. The masonry is of the finest description, and the details have been executed with great care and fidelity. The architect of this magnificent structure is Mr. J. Wilson, F.S.A., of Bath, and the plan upon which the schools have been built has been widely commended. The builders, Messrs. E. and J. Tucker, of Ashton, have carried out their contract in an admirable manner, resulting in a building that presents an imposing appearance. Situated on a gentle eminence, surrounded by delightful, undulated, and pleasantly wooded country, the schools are a conspicuous and agreeable object, materially enriching the picturesque landscape. This photograph is a testament to the architectural prowess of the time and the commitment to providing quality education facilities.
