EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print brings to life The New State Ball-Room at Buckingham Palace as it appeared in 1856. The London residence of the British sovereign showcases the grandeur and opulence of Victorian-era design. Our representation of this magnificent apartment displays the throne or dais end, where the effect of light for the dance is captured in this image. The north wall features paintings of the Hours of the Day, expertly copied after Raphael by Professor N. Canzoni. The south wall is adorned with two large looking-glasses, surrounded by a broad moulding, enriched with gold and colour, the upper part carrying a frieze decorated by some very pleasing sculpture by Theed. Above the dais rises the bold arch, supporting its figure of Fame, bearing a medallion. The architect of this neoclassical masterpiece is Mr. James Pennethorne. Mr. Lewis Gruner was responsible for the decorative details, which have been ably carried out by Mr. Moxon. Messrs. Osler, of Birmingham, have constructed the gaseliers or lamps to the ceiling. This print was originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, providing a glimpse into the grandeur and beauty of this iconic room. With its ornate mouldings, candlesticks, and neoclassical design, The New State Ball-Room at Buckingham Palace remains a tourist attraction and a testament to the opulence of the 19th century.
