The New Steam-yacht "Cleopatra" built for Il Hami Pacha, Son of the Late Viceroy of Egypt, 1858. During her trial trip, although...the Cleopatra was worked by powerful engines, and driven at a speed sometimes of seventeen miles an hour, the vibratory motion was scarcely perceptible even in the saloons nearest to the engine-room. The whole ship is of iron. Her extreme length over all is 202 feet, breadth 21, and 10½ feet deep...Her appearance in the water is singularly graceful and striking...The great novelty, however, of the vessel consists in her being fitted with engines of a perfectly new construction, known as Scott Russell's patent three-cylinder engine, and which are so great an improvement on the old plan that their general adoption both for screw and paddle vessels is now certain'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the magnificent steam-yacht "Cleopatra," built for Il Hami Pacha, the son of the Late Viceroy of Egypt, in 1858. The creator of this image remains unknown, but the details of this engineering marvel were extensively documented in the "Illustrated London News" of the time. During her trial run, the "Cleopatra" demonstrated impressive power, reaching speeds of seventeen miles per hour while maintaining minimal vibratory motion, even in the saloons closest to the engine room. This remarkable feat was a testament to the advanced engineering of the vessel, which was entirely constructed of iron. Measuring 202 feet in length, 21 feet in breadth, and 10½ feet in depth, the "Cleopatra" boasted an elegant and striking appearance as it graced the waters. However, the true innovation of this vessel lay in its engines. Known as Scott Russell's patent three-cylinder engine, these engines represented a significant improvement over the traditional designs. Their adoption for both screw and paddle vessels was imminent, marking a pivotal moment in maritime history. The "Cleopatra" served as a symbol of progress and luxury, reflecting the technological advancements of the era and the wealth and power of its esteemed owner.
