New Swindon, 1845. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
New Swindon, 1845. Expansion due to the construction of the Great Western Railway in Wiltshire. The New Town, which has sprung up within the last two years, is principally occupied by the artisans employed by the Railway Company, who make it a sort of depot for their various works. The houses are all neatly built of stone, with slated roofs, and arranged in streets. They have already Bristol, Taunton, Exeter, and Bath streets; and others are fast rising...The old town has all the characteristics of an English market town. The old picturesque houses and cottages are here beginning to make way for the more modern style of architecture; and, if half the projects now in contemplation are completed, the old and new towns will ere long be amalgamated in one. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "New Swindon, 1845" captures the essence of a rapidly expanding town in Wiltshire, England. Created by Ebenezer Landells for the Illustrated London News in the 19th century, this image showcases the transformation brought about by the construction of the Great Western Railway. The new town that has emerged within just two years is primarily inhabited by skilled artisans employed by the railway company. Neatly built stone houses with slated roofs line streets such as Bristol, Taunton, Exeter, and Bath. As more projects are underway, it seems inevitable that both old and new towns will soon merge into one harmonious entity. In contrast to its modern counterpart, the old town maintains its traditional English market town charm. However, even here change is evident as picturesque cottages give way to contemporary architectural styles. This engraving beautifully depicts this transition from rustic rural life to a more urbanized landscape. Ebenezer Landells' work not only serves as a historical record but also highlights how regionalism played a significant role during this period of British history. The print reflects an era when progress was reshaping countryside communities across Britain. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of artistry captured through Landells' lens and engraved onto paper for all to see in newspapers like Illustrated London News, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand how New Swindon came into being – an emblematic symbol of growth and transformation during Victorian England.
