Newton Investigating Light, c1879
Newton Investigating Light, c1879. English scientist and mathematician Isaac Newtons (1642-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light, set out in Opticks, that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705, Newton is buried in Westminster Abbey, London. Engraving after picture by JA Houston published c1879

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned English scientist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton, investigating light in the late 17th century. Newton's groundbreaking discoveries have left an indelible mark on science and human thought. His monumental work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), introduced his theories of gravity and three laws of motion that revolutionized our understanding of the physical world. In addition to his contributions to physics, Newton delved into optics and the nature of light as outlined in his influential book Opticks. It was through these studies that he constructed the first reflecting telescope, further expanding humanity's knowledge of celestial bodies. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 for his exceptional achievements, Newton's legacy continues to be celebrated today. He rests eternally at Westminster Abbey in London, a testament to his profound impact on scientific progress. The engraving after a picture by JA Houston published around 1879 beautifully portrays this eminent figure engrossed in his exploration. This monochrome image transports us back to a time when great minds like Newton dedicated themselves tirelessly to unraveling the mysteries of our universe. As we gaze upon this remarkable portrait, we are reminded not only of Newton's brilliance but also of the countless scientists who have followed in his footsteps, pushing boundaries and advancing human knowledge with their unwavering curiosity.
