The Niagara above the Falls - by our special artist G. H. Andrews, 1860. The Niagara River, forming part of the boundary line between the United States and Canada, issues from the north-east end of Lake Erie, and flows into Lake Ontario, which is 834 feet lower than Lake Erie. The river descends through this difference in level in the space of about thirty-three miles. Near the place where it issues from Lake Erie the river runs through a level country, and its banks are not much elevated above the surface of the water. The current is gentle, hardly exceeding two miles and a half an hour. The width of the river is about one mile, and it preserves this width until it arrives at Grand Island, by which it is divided into two arms. About ten miles lower down, at Navy Island, both arms reunite, and at this place the river is about two miles wide. A little lower down, at the mouth of the Welland or Chippeway River, it suddenly contracts to less than a mile, and its current rapidly increases from three to seven or eight miles an hour. The course of the river in this part is nearly due west, and its banks begin to rise, first to ten or twelve feet, and soon to twenty, thirty, and fifty feet, above the surface of the water'. The Niagara above the Falls
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning 19th-century artwork by acclaimed British artist G. H. Andrews, as captured in this photographic print. This masterpiece, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, invites us to explore the breathtaking beauty and power of the Niagara River as it flows between the United States and Canada. The Niagara River originates from the north-eastern end of Lake Erie and flows into Lake Ontario, a difference in elevation of 834 feet that the river covers in approximately thirty-three miles. In its early stages, the river runs through a flat terrain, with gentle currents and banks barely rising above the water's surface. The width of the river remains consistent at about one mile until it reaches Grand Island, where it divides into two arms. However, the tranquility of the river is soon disrupted as it approaches Navy Island. Both arms of the river reunite, and the current dramatically increases from three to seven or eight miles an hour. The river's course shifts nearly due west, and its banks begin to rise significantly, reaching heights of ten to twelve feet, then twenty, thirty, and even fifty feet above the water's surface. This artwork not only showcases the Niagara River's natural splendor but also highlights the dynamic forces that shape its landscape. The intricate details and vibrant colors of Andrews' painting transport us to the very heart of this natural wonder, leaving us in awe of the power and majesty of the Niagara Falls. This photographic print is a testament to the artistic prowess of G. H. Andrews and the descriptive power of the "Illustrated London News," which allowed its readers to experience the wonders of the world from the comfort of their own homes.
